was in Amsterdam Resistance Museum, while reading this book. What a perfect dovetail of information about a very complex time in Indonesian history. Characters are believable, and you root for them as their lives play out. Would love a sequel!

Lian draws her characters well. I too am interested to know what became of Jenny. And I would be interested in knowing more of Ocho's background.

Karen J. Thistlethwaite says:

I thoroughly enjoyed your book. As I read, I became "close" to the three generations of the family while learning so much about their history and culture. This beautifully written novel is so captivating that, once you begin reading it, you can't put it down.

Just finished your book and I absolutely loved it. Thank you for the history lesson. My father was born in Indonesia, but moved to Holland with his family when Sukarno came into power since my grandfather was in the Dutch army. My mom met my Dad and they were married in Holland. We immigrated to the U.S. in 1962. Lots I still don't know about my Indonesian heritage. So your book was a beginning of sorts for me.
Thank you.

Annie says:

I finished reading "Only a Girl" last night and was so touched that I felt I needed to share my thoughts. Lian Gouw has written a tender tale giving her readers a taste of what went on in, what is to a lot of us, a mysterious part of the world. Through the eyes of a child we catch glimpses of life in a traditional family, the horror of war, and the hope that dwells in those who refuse to break. I put down the book wanting for more and I do hope another novel is in the works. I want to know what happens to Jenny.
