The recurring question at the various November book club discussions was which books I thought were similar to Only A Girl.
The two contemporary titles that immediately came to mind were, When the Elephants Dance by Tess Uriza Holthe and My Half of the Sky by Jana McBurney Lin.
In When the Elephants Dance, Tess Holthe transports her reader to the Philippines during the years of WWII, when Japan wrestled the USA for control over this corner of tropical paradise. The spotlight is turned on little known Philippino history and culture through an intricate weave of world shaking events and the hopes, courage, and beliefs of common people.
Li Hui, Jana McBurney Lin’s protagonist in My Half of the Sky, is a young woman called upon to navigate between old cultural beliefs of a rural village in China and practicalities of modern life half a continent away. Though her half of the sky is hard to uphold, Li Hui manages. McBurney Lin’s eloquent prose submerges her reader in a story of family ties, ambitions, sacrifices and realizations of self worth.

Martha Clark Scala says:
I often thought of author Gail Tsukiyama when I read Lian Gouw's book, too. And I second Lian's comment about My Half of the Sky.
